Tim Harvey
Tim Harvey is pastor of the Central Church of the Brethren in downtown Roanoke, Va. Previously he served the New Hope Church of the Brethren in Patrick County, Va., from 1999 to 2004.
A native of Broadway, Va., Tim attended the Bethel Church of the Brethren as a youth, where he was baptized in November 1983. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1992, and for the next thee years worked as an analytical chemist at Southern Testing and Research Laboratories in Wilson, N.C. Responding to the call of God to enter the pastoral ministry (a call that came during the 1990 National Youth Conference), Tim attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary, graduating with a master of divinity degree in 1999. While at EMS, Tim served as youth pastor at the Dayton (Va.) Church of the Brethren.
Tim and his wife, Lynette, met in high school, and were married in December 1992. Lynette is a math teacher at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. They have three children: Emily, Zachary, and Rose. Their family hobbies include reading, outdoor activities, and riding unicycles.
As a pastor, one area of personal and professional growth for Tim has been understanding mission and ministry in an urban setting. There are not many “downtown” churches among the Brethren, and some of the ministry challenges are unique. One of the more satisfying areas of ministry has been working with Congregations in Action, an ecumenical group of nine congregations in downtown Roanoke area that partners with a local elementary school. Congregations in Action seeks to be a blessing to the City of Roanoke by both meeting the needs of at-risk students in Roanoke City Schools and educating the congregations and the community about the challenges facing our children and schools.
